Dear Londoners — There was some discussion online over the weekend about what an odd name for a constituency Holborn and St Pancras really is. In reality, it stretches well beyond those central districts, through Camden and Kentish Town and all the way up to Highgate. Iconic landmarks like the Holborn viaduct don’t even fall within the boundaries.
It’s a reminder of what a grab-bag any London constituency can be, combining dozens of very different neighbourhoods. In this case, the area includes several of the UK’s busiest train stations, offices at the heart of the AI industry, swathes of Hampstead Heath and several universities. From the leafy suburbs to Lincoln’s Inn, it’s a true smorgasbord of both modern and historic London.
We’ll be on the ground in the coming weeks to follow the by-election circus, but as we’re only a small team, we need your help. Camden’s by-election brawl begins
Looking forward to a month of intensive by-election coverage? Or are you experiencing by-election fatigue? Whichever side you land on, the race for Holborn and St Pancras is shaping up to be one of the most consequential London votes in decades. Over the weekend, the respective parties set out their stalls.
In her first interview after being selected by the local Labour party, Sagal Abdi-Wali put forward her focus on homelessness. “I think there’s an opportunity now to really build on what Andy Burnham as prime minister wants to do nationally,” she told the Camden New Journal, saying that under Blair and Brown, Camden had “virtually eradicated” homelessness. Abdi-Wali has been the leader of Camden council for all of three months, before which she was a local government officer at Camden council and a governor at two local schools.
